Volleyball here is the two-player beach version: one player each side of a net, and a ball that must not touch the ground on your half. Move, jump and strike it back over. Simple to start, and surprisingly tense once rallies get long and both players are diving for the same corner.
The tactical heart of volleyball is the same at any scale: make your opponent move. A ball placed where they are not is worth far more than a ball hit hard at where they already stand. Once you start aiming rather than just returning, the whole game opens up.
Tips & strategy
Aim away from your opponent, not at the biggest gap in the net. A ball sent to the side they have just vacated forces a sprint they usually cannot make, and stringing those together wins points far more reliably than power.
Jump for the spike only when the ball is above net height. Leaping at a low ball sends it into the net and gives away the point. If it is below the tape, play it safe and set yourself up for the next one.
Recover to the middle after every shot. From the centre of your half you can reach either sideline, and most points are lost by a player still standing where their last shot was played from.
Watch the ball's arc rather than its speed. A high, slow ball gives you time to get under it and strike properly, so moving early to the landing spot beats reacting late even when there is no rush.
