Ping Pong is the game that arguably started video games: two paddles, a ball, and a line down the middle. You slide your paddle up and down to keep the ball in play and angle it past your opponent. Decades on, the pure back-and-forth still works because it is instantly understood and immediately competitive.
The depth hides in the angles. Where the ball strikes your paddle changes the angle it leaves at, so a paddle is not just a wall but a tool for aiming. The best players do not simply return the ball, they place it, using the edges of the paddle to send it where their opponent is not.
Hit with the edges of the paddle, not just the middle. The contact point changes the ball's angle, so catching it near the top or bottom of your paddle sends it off on a diagonal that is much harder to return than a flat rebound.
Return to the centre of your side after each hit. From the middle you can reach a ball sent high or low with equal speed. Drifting to one edge leaves the other end of your side wide open for the next shot.
Watch your opponent's paddle position, not just the ball. If they are stuck high, angle your return low, and vice versa. Placing the ball where they have to scramble wins far more points than simply hitting it back hard.
Add angle when you are on the attack and play safe down the middle when you are stretched. A steep angle is a winner when you have time to set it up, but attempted from a lunge it usually sails wide.

Where it hits your paddle matters. Striking near the edges sends it off on a sharper diagonal than a central hit.
