Pishti is a capture card game played across Turkey, Greece and the Balkans. Cards are played onto a central pile, and whenever you match the rank of the top card you take the whole pile. Jacks capture regardless, which makes them the most valuable cards in the deck.
The move that gives the game its name is the pishti: capturing a pile that consists of exactly one card. It scores a large bonus, so a huge part of the skill is judging when your opponent has been forced to leave a single card exposed, and holding the right card back for that moment.
Hold your jacks. A jack captures whatever is on the pile regardless of rank, so playing one onto a small pile wastes it. Save them for when the pile has grown large.
Watch for the single-card pile. Capturing a pile of exactly one card scores a big bonus, so when your opponent leaves one exposed and you hold its match, that is the moment to take it.
Think about what you leave behind. Every card you play without capturing sits on top for your opponent, so playing a rank they are likely to hold simply hands them the pile.
Count the high cards. Aces and jacks are worth extra at the end, so tracking which have gone tells you whether the remaining pile is worth fighting for.
