Spade Tricks is a trick-taking card game in the family that includes Spades and Whist. Spades are permanently trumps, you must follow the suit that was led if you can, and the highest card takes the trick. Win more tricks than your opponent to take the game.
Trick-taking is one of the oldest and best card game structures there is, and the reason is the tension between two obligations. You have to follow suit, so your options are constrained, but the cards you choose to spend and the ones you hold back decide everything several tricks later.
Do not waste high spades early. Trumps are at their most valuable when your opponent still holds cards they want to win with, so a spade spent on a trick nobody cared about is a trick you gave away later.
Count the cards that have gone. Keeping rough track of which high cards have been played tells you whether your queen is now the best remaining card in its suit, which is the single most useful habit in any trick-taking game.
Lead your long suit. If you hold five cards of one suit, your opponent probably holds few, and repeatedly leading it forces them to discard or trump, both of which weaken their hand.
Hold a low trump for the endgame. Even a small spade wins a trick once everyone is out of the led suit, and having one in reserve when the hand thins out is often worth more than a high card in another suit.
