Crazy Eights is the shedding game that most card families teach first, and the ancestor of every modern colour-matching card game. Play a card that matches the top of the pile by rank or suit, and if you cannot, draw until you can. First player to empty their hand wins the round.
The eights are what give it the name and the bite. An eight is wild and can be played on anything, letting you change the suit to whatever suits your hand. Holding one back for the right moment, rather than dumping it early, is the single decision that separates casual players from good ones.
Tips & strategy
Save your eights for when you are stuck. An eight can be played on anything, so it is your escape hatch. Playing one early just to change the suit wastes the card that could have rescued you three turns later when you would otherwise be drawing from the deck.
Shed your awkward suits first. If you hold five hearts and one club, play the club while you have the chance. Being left holding a single card of a suit that never comes around is how players end up drawing repeatedly at the end of a round.
Watch which suit the computer keeps changing to. A player who repeatedly switches to spades almost certainly holds several spades, so switching the suit away from that on your next play makes their hand much harder to shed.
Count how many cards your opponent holds. When they are down to one or two, prioritise changing the suit or playing high cards over tidying your own hand. Blocking their finish matters more than optimising your own at that point.
