About this game

Air hockey is the arcade table where a puck skims across a near-frictionless surface and two players smack it back and forth at speed. You slide your paddle to block your goal and fire the puck into theirs. It is fast, loud and immediate, and it translates to the screen with the same twitchy, reactive fun.

For all its speed there is real technique here. A puck struck off-centre flies at an angle, and the best players use the side walls to bank shots past a defender rather than firing straight into a waiting paddle. Defence and attack happen in the same motion, which is what makes rallies so tense.

Tips & strategy

Do not just swat the puck, hit it with a direction in mind. Striking it off-centre sends it at an angle, and banking it off a side wall can curl it around your opponent's paddle into the goal. Straight shots are the easiest to block.

Stay back and defensive when the puck is loose. Charging forward leaves your goal wide open for a fast counter. Keep your paddle between the puck and your goal, and strike only when you have a clear, committed hit.

Add pace by moving into the puck as you hit it, rather than letting it bounce off a still paddle. A puck struck with forward momentum is much harder to react to, and speed is your best weapon in a sport this fast.

Watch the angles off the walls, not just the puck. Anticipating where a banked shot will rebound lets you get your paddle there before it arrives, which is the difference between a save and a goal conceded.

Questions

How do I score?

By knocking the puck into your opponent's goal. First to the set score wins.

Can two people play?

Yes. In two-player mode each side controls their own paddle, including with two fingers on a touchscreen.

Should I attack or defend?

Both, constantly. Keep your paddle guarding your goal and strike when a clear shot opens up. Over-committing to attack leaves you exposed.

How do I make the puck faster?

Move your paddle into the puck as you strike, adding your own momentum rather than letting it bounce off.
