Penalty Kicks is football reduced to its most nerve-wracking moment. The ball is on the spot, the keeper is on the line, and you have one shot. Pick your corner, judge your power, and hope you have guessed differently from the goalkeeper. Five kicks, and the score at the end is yours.
Real penalty taking is a psychological duel, and the same is true here. The keeper commits before the ball arrives, so this is not about beating a reaction, it is about not being predictable. Anyone who puts every kick in the same corner will find it saved sooner rather than later.
Aim for the corners, not the middle of the goal. A keeper who guesses correctly still cannot reach a ball tucked right into the side netting, whereas a central shot at comfortable height is saved even by a wrong guess.
Vary your corners deliberately. Repeating a successful side is the fastest way to get read, and mixing left, right and the occasional straight shot keeps the keeper genuinely guessing.
Do not use maximum power every time. The hardest shots are the least accurate, and a controlled kick placed precisely beats a rocket that flies over the bar. Power only matters if the ball is on target.
Aim high rather than low when in doubt. Keepers dive along the ground far more readily, so the upper corners are statistically the hardest area to reach, at the cost of a slightly smaller margin for error.
Five, and your score is how many of them you convert.
The keeper commits to a side, so the game is about being unpredictable rather than beating a reaction.
The corners, and the upper corners in particular, since those are the hardest for a keeper to reach.
Some, but accuracy matters more. A perfectly placed kick beats a wild powerful one.
