Hearts is the trick-taking game where winning is bad. Every heart you collect costs a point and the queen of spades costs thirteen, so the whole aim is to take as few tricks as possible — or at least the harmless ones. Lowest score wins.
That inversion changes everything about how you play. Your high cards become liabilities rather than assets, and a hand full of aces is a hand full of problems. Getting rid of dangerous cards without being forced to take a trick is the entire art of the game.
Get rid of high spades early. The queen of spades is thirteen points on its own, and holding the ace or king means you will be forced to take her whenever she appears.
Void a suit if you can. Once you hold no cards of a suit, you can discard your dangerous cards on it whenever it is led, which is the single most powerful position in the game.
Lead low, discard high. When you lead you want to lose the trick, so play your smallest card. When you cannot follow suit, dump your most dangerous one.
Count the hearts that have gone. Knowing that most hearts are already out tells you when the remaining tricks are safe to take, which matters a great deal at the end of a hand.
Each heart is one point, the queen of spades is thirteen, and the lowest total wins.
Yes, if you hold a card of the led suit. Only when you are void may you play something else.
Hearts cannot be led until one has been played on another suit, which stops the game turning nasty immediately.
In Spades you want tricks; in Hearts they mostly hurt you, which reverses almost every instinct.
Completely free, with no trial and no unlock. Hearts loads with the page and plays immediately, without an install step or a video ad first.
