About this game

Gin Rummy asks you to organise ten cards into sets of the same rank and runs of the same suit. Whatever will not fit is your deadwood, and once that totals ten or less you can knock and compare. A hand with no deadwood at all is gin, and it scores a large bonus.

The game is a constant conversation with the discard pile. Every card you throw tells your opponent something, and every card they take tells you what they are building. Playing well means reading that exchange as much as tidying your own hand.

Tips & strategy

Count deadwood, not melds. A hand with two neat melds and a king left over is worse than a messy hand of low cards, because it is the leftovers that score against you.

Throw high cards early. A king costs ten points if you are caught with it and helps almost no run, so it is the first thing to lose unless it is already part of something.

Watch what the bot takes from the discard. A card picked up is a card it needed, which tells you exactly which suit or rank to stop feeding it.

Knock as soon as you sensibly can. Waiting for gin is tempting, but every extra turn is a chance for your opponent to knock first and undercut you.

Questions

What is deadwood?

The cards left over once you have formed your best sets and runs. Face cards count ten, aces one.

When can I knock?

When your deadwood totals ten or less.

What is gin?

A hand with no deadwood at all. It scores a bonus on top of the difference.

Can a card be in two melds?

No. Each card belongs to one meld only, which is often what makes a promising hand score worse than it looks.
