About this game

Dice 31 is a small game of nerve. Roll a die, add it to your total, and decide whether to roll again. Get as close to thirty-one as you can, and go over it and you are bust. Then the computer takes its turn and tries to beat you without busting either.

It is Blackjack's simpler cousin, and it exposes the same decision in a purer form. Every roll has a known risk, and the question is always whether the points you might gain justify the chance of losing everything. Knowing when to stop is the only skill in the game, and it is a real one.

Tips & strategy

Work out your bust chance before each roll. On twenty-six you are safe whatever comes; on twenty-seven a six busts you, and the danger climbs from there. Doing that quick sum turns a guess into a decision.

Play the opponent, not just the target. If the computer has already stopped on a low total, you only need to beat it, so stopping early is correct. If it has a strong total, you have to take a risk you would otherwise avoid.

Stopping in the high twenties is usually right. Thirty-one exactly is satisfying but chasing it from twenty-eight risks a lot for a little, and consistently stopping around twenty-seven or twenty-eight wins more rounds than perfectionism.

Remember each roll is independent. A run of low numbers does not mean a six is coming, and a run of sixes does not mean they are finished. The odds are the same on every single roll.

Questions

What happens if I go over 31?

You are bust and lose the round immediately, so knowing when to stop is everything.

Does hitting exactly 31 do anything special?

It is the best possible total, so it is very hard to beat, but the computer still gets its turn.

What if we both go bust?

The round is a draw.

Is there any skill?

Yes. The dice are random but the decision of when to stop is genuinely strategic.

Do I have to sign up to play?
