About this game

Dice Duel is the classic push-your-luck game usually known as Pig. Roll a die and add it to your turn total, then decide: roll again for more, or bank what you have and pass the turn. The catch is brutal in its simplicity. Roll a one and your entire turn total vanishes.

For a game with one decision it is remarkably well studied. Mathematicians have worked out the optimal strategy, and it is not what most people play. The instinct to keep rolling while you are ahead is exactly what loses games, and learning to bank earlier than feels comfortable is the whole skill.

Tips & strategy

Bank around twenty. The mathematically strong approach is to keep rolling until your turn total reaches roughly twenty, then bank. That threshold balances the one-in-six chance of losing everything against the points you would gain.

Adjust when you are behind. If your opponent is close to a hundred, the safe strategy stops being correct, because banking small amounts will not catch them. Being behind is when pushing your luck actually becomes the right play.

Adjust when you are ahead too. If you only need a handful of points to win, bank the moment you have enough. There is no prize for the biggest turn, only for reaching the target first.

Remember the odds never change. Each roll carries the same one-in-six chance of a one, regardless of how many safe rolls you have just had. A long lucky run does not mean a one is coming, and it does not mean it is not.

Questions

What happens if I roll a one?

Your entire turn total is wiped out and play passes to your opponent. Anything already banked is safe.

What is the target score?

One hundred points. First player to reach it wins.

What is the best strategy?

Banking at around twenty points per turn is close to optimal, though you should push harder when behind and bank sooner when close to winning.

Can I play a friend?

Yes, two players can share one device.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Dice Duel runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
