A typing test does one thing: it shows you a word, you type it, and it counts how many you get through before the clock runs out. The result is your typing speed, and it is one of the few skills where a few minutes of honest measurement tells you exactly where you stand.
Typing speed matters more than most people assume. The gap between thirty words a minute and seventy is hours of your life every week if you write for a living, and unlike most skills it responds quickly to deliberate practice. A test like this is the starting point: measure first, then work on the weaknesses it exposes.
Prioritise accuracy over raw speed. Every mistyped word costs you the time to notice it and fix it, which is far more than the fraction of a second you saved by rushing. Typists who slow down slightly almost always score higher.
Keep your fingers on the home row and let each finger cover its own keys. Hunting and pecking has a hard ceiling of around forty words a minute, while touch typing has no real limit until you reach the speed of thought.
Look at the screen, not your hands. Glancing down costs you the time to refocus on every single word, and it prevents your fingers from ever learning the key positions properly. This is uncomfortable at first and pays off within days.
Practise in short, regular sessions rather than long ones. Ten focused minutes a day builds typing speed far faster than an hour once a week, because the skill is muscle memory and muscle memory consolidates with repetition and rest.
Around forty words a minute is average, sixty is solid, and above eighty is fast. Professional typists often exceed a hundred.
Very much. Corrections cost more time than they save, so accurate typing is usually faster overall than reckless typing.
Touch typing with all fingers on the home row, without looking at the keyboard, in short daily practice sessions.
Typing speed depends on tiredness, keyboard familiarity and which words came up. Take the average of several tests.
Nothing at all. The whole of Typing Speed Test is built into the page itself, which is why there is no loading bar and no waiting before you can play.
