About this game

Math Sprint puts an arithmetic question on screen and a clock underneath it. Answer, get another, and keep going until time runs out. It is mental arithmetic as a reflex sport, and it is far more addictive than any worksheet has ever managed to be.

The reason timed drilling works is that arithmetic fluency is mostly recall, not calculation. Once you know that seven eights are fifty-six rather than working it out each time, everything built on top of it gets easier. A game like this turns that memorisation into something you actually want to repeat.

Tips & strategy

Estimate before you read the options. Working out roughly what the answer should be first means you can often reject two or three choices instantly, which is much faster than checking each one properly.

Learn to spot the last digit. In addition and multiplication the final digit of the answer is quick to work out on its own, and it usually eliminates every wrong option without needing the full calculation.

Do not dwell on a question you have got wrong. The clock keeps running, and the biggest score losses come from stopping to work out what went wrong instead of moving on to the next question.

Practise in short bursts. Arithmetic recall improves with frequent brief sessions far more than with occasional long ones, so a couple of minutes a day beats twenty minutes once a week.

Questions

What kind of questions are there?

Straightforward arithmetic, so you can practise mental calculation under time pressure.

Is it good for children?

Yes. Timed arithmetic drilling is one of the most effective ways to build number fluency, and a game format keeps children coming back.

What happens if I answer wrong?

You are told immediately and the round continues, so mistakes cost time rather than ending the game.

Is my best score saved?

Yes, in your browser on the same device.

Is it really free?

Nothing at all. The whole of Math Sprint is built into the page itself, which is why there is no loading bar and no waiting before you can play.
