Sum Chain fills a grid with numbers and gives you a target. Link neighbouring cells into a chain whose values add up to exactly that target, and it clears. Simple to describe, and genuinely absorbing once the clock is running and the obvious combinations have gone.
It is mental arithmetic disguised as a spatial puzzle. You are not just adding, you are scanning a grid for a set of numbers that both sum correctly and happen to sit next to each other. That second constraint is what makes it a puzzle rather than a worksheet.
Look for the large numbers first. The biggest value in the grid heavily constrains what can join it, so starting from there and working out what is still needed is faster than adding up from small numbers.
Aim for short chains. Two or three cells are quicker to spot and quicker to draw than a long winding route, and under time pressure speed matters more than elegance.
Scan the grid, do not stare at one region. When nothing works in the area you are looking at, moving your eyes elsewhere finds a solution far faster than trying harder in the same spot.
Keep the remainder in mind. Once you have selected a few cells, think in terms of what is left to reach rather than recalculating the total each time you add a cell.
