About this game

The 24 Game gives you four numbers and asks you to combine them with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to make exactly 24. Every number must be used once, and the order is yours to choose. It is one of the best mental arithmetic games ever devised.

What makes it more than a sum is that most hands have a solution hiding behind an unintuitive step. The obvious route rarely works, and the answer often requires dividing before multiplying, or making a fraction on the way to a whole number. Almost every set of four numbers can reach 24 somehow.

Tips & strategy

Look for the factor pairs of 24 first. Three times eight, four times six, and twelve times two are the usual routes, so ask whether you can build one of those numbers from the others rather than working forward blindly.

Do not avoid division. Beginners stick to adding and multiplying, but many hands only work if you divide somewhere, sometimes producing a fraction that resolves later. Being willing to make an odd intermediate value is what unlocks hard sets.

Try subtracting to reach a useful number. If you have a large number, subtracting your way down to six or eight and then multiplying is often easier than attacking 24 directly.

Work backward from 24. Ask what pair of numbers would give you 24, then whether your remaining values can produce them. That is usually faster than exploring every combination forward.

Questions

Do I have to use all four numbers?

Yes, each exactly once, in whatever order you like.

Which operations are allowed?

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Does every hand have a solution?

The great majority do, though a small number of sets genuinely cannot reach 24.

Can intermediate results be fractions?

Yes, and sometimes they must be. Many solutions pass through a fraction on the way to 24.

Is there anything to install?

Nothing at all. The whole of 24 Game is built into the page itself, which is why there is no loading bar and no waiting before you can play.
