Compare edges rather than overall size. Two pieces of similar size often differ in one corner or notch, and that detail determines which box they belong to.
Leave the similar pieces until last. When only two pieces and two boxes remain, elimination tells you the answer without careful comparison.
Take your time. Wrong placements cost moves, and your score is the number of moves used, so a moment of looking is cheaper than a guess.
