About this game

Okey 101 adds a scoring threshold to the tile game. You cannot lay anything on the table until the sets and runs in your hand are worth at least 101 points, which forces you to build a substantial hand before you can start unloading it.

That threshold changes the whole shape of play. In ordinary Okey you can finish the moment your hand comes together; here you have to hold everything hidden while accumulating value, and the tension is in deciding whether to wait for a bigger hand or lay down as soon as you clear the bar.

Tips & strategy

Count your points before reaching for the button. The 101 threshold is calculated from the sets and runs you actually hold, so a hand that looks strong can fall short if too much of it is loose tiles.

Lay down as soon as you clear 101. Waiting for a bigger hand is tempting, but every extra round is a chance for someone else to go down first, and unplayed tiles count against you at the end.

Once you are down, meld aggressively. Adding single tiles to groups already on the table is how you empty your rack, and it costs nothing, so do it whenever a tile fits.

Remember there is no wrapping. A run cannot go 12-13-1, so the highest and lowest tiles are less flexible here than you might expect from other rummy games.

Questions

What does the 101 mean?

You cannot lay any tiles on the table until the sets and runs in your hand total at least 101 points.

What is melding?

Adding individual tiles to groups already on the table, which you can only do after laying your own hand down.

Can a run wrap around from 13 to 1?

No. Unlike some rummy variants, wrapping is not allowed in this version.

How is the match scored?

Tiles left on your rack at the end of a round count as penalties, so being caught with a full hand is expensive.
