About this game

Nurikabe divides the grid into islands and the sea around them. Each number is an island of exactly that many white cells, no two islands may touch, and the shaded wall must form a single connected region with no solid two-by-two block anywhere in it.

That last rule is what gives the puzzle its character. The wall has to snake rather than sprawl, so a shading that satisfies every island can still be wrong because it left a fat square somewhere. Checking it is a habit that takes a few puzzles to build.

Tips & strategy

Start with the ones. A cell marked one is an island by itself, so every neighbour is wall, and that gives you four free cells to shade immediately.

Shade between nearby numbers. Two numbered cells with a single gap between them cannot be joined, so that gap is always wall.

Watch for two-by-two blocks as you go. It is much easier to avoid one than to discover it after shading half the grid, so check each addition against its three neighbours.

Remember the wall must stay connected. A shaded region cut off from the rest is wrong even if every island is the right size, and that check catches a lot of near-misses.

Questions

What do the numbers mean?

The size of the island of white cells that the number belongs to.

Can two islands touch?

No, they must always be separated by wall.

What is the two-by-two rule?

The shaded wall may never contain a solid block of four cells in a square.

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes. The wall is generated first as a valid snake, and the islands are read off from what it encloses.

Is there anything to install?

Completely free, with no trial and no unlock. Nurikabe loads with the page and plays immediately, without an install step or a video ad first.
