About this game

FreeCell deals every card face up, which changes solitaire completely. Nothing is hidden, so there is no luck in what you cannot see: the position in front of you contains all the information, and almost every deal can be solved with correct play. It is a puzzle rather than a gamble.

The four free cells are temporary parking for a single card each, and they are what make the game work. They also make it hard, because every card you park reduces how many you can move as a group. The whole discipline of FreeCell is spending free cells reluctantly.

Tips & strategy

Empty a column as early as you can. An empty column is worth far more than a free cell, because it doubles the number of cards you can move as a group and can hold an entire sequence.

Do not fill your free cells. Every occupied cell shrinks the size of the run you can shift, and a board with four full cells and no empty column is usually lost even when it looks tidy.

Get the aces out but do not rush every card upward. Sending a low card to the foundation too early removes something you might have needed to build on, and unlike Klondike you cannot bring it back.

Plan several moves ahead before touching anything. FreeCell rewards looking at the whole board, because the move that helps is often four moves away and requires the free cells you were about to waste.

Questions

Is every deal winnable?

The overwhelming majority are. Because all cards are visible, FreeCell is a puzzle you can reason about rather than a game of chance.

What are the free cells for?

Each holds one card temporarily. They are the pressure valve of the game, but using them reduces how many cards you can move at once.

Why can I not move a long sequence?

A multi-card move is only allowed if you could have made it one card at a time, so the number depends on your free cells and empty columns.

How is it different from Klondike?

Nothing is hidden and there is no stock to draw from, which removes the luck and makes it a pure thinking game.

Do I have to sign up to play?

No sign-up, no email, no account. Open the page and FreeCell is ready to play straight away, on a phone or a desktop.
