About this game

Chase Tag is playground tag on a screen, and it needs two people. One player runs, the other chases, and the clock decides who wins: survive to the end and the runner takes it, get caught and the chaser does. Then you swap and do it again.

The reason tag has survived for thousands of years is that the two roles feel completely different. Running is about reading space and never letting yourself get cornered; chasing is about cutting angles rather than following. Swapping roles between rounds is what makes it fair and what makes it fun.

Tips & strategy

As the runner, use open space rather than corners. Getting trapped against an edge is how most runners are caught, so keep the middle of the arena available as an escape route.

As the chaser, cut the angle instead of following. Running directly at a fleeing player means always arriving where they just were. Aiming at where they are heading closes the gap far faster.

Runners should change direction unpredictably. A runner moving in a smooth curve is easy to intercept, while sudden reversals force the chaser to stop and turn, which costs them time.

Swap roles every round. The two jobs need different skills and the chaser usually has the harder task, so alternating keeps it even and stops one player getting frustrated.

Questions

Do I need a second player?

Yes. This is a two-player game, with one runner and one chaser sharing the keyboard.

How does the runner win?

By staying uncaught until the timer runs out.

What are the controls?

Each player has their own set of keys, with the chaser on the arrow keys.

Should we swap roles?

Yes, chasing is generally harder, so alternating keeps things fair.

Is there anything to install?

No. Chase Tag runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
