Battleship Solitaire is the puzzle version of the guessing game. A small fleet is hidden in the grid, the numbers along the edges say how many ship cells sit in each row and column, and your job is to deduce exactly where every vessel lies.
The rule that makes it tractable is that ships never touch, not even at a corner. That means every ship is surrounded by water, so placing one immediately clears a ring of cells around it, and those cleared cells constrain everything else.
Start with rows and columns marked zero. Everything in them is water, and that often isolates the only place a long ship can fit elsewhere.
Place the biggest ship first. A three-cell ship has far fewer possible positions than a single, and pinning it down clears a large area through the no-touching rule.
Surround every ship you find. As soon as you are sure of a ship cell, every diagonal and adjacent cell outside the ship is water, which is usually more informative than the ship itself.
Count what is left in each line. A row needing two more cells with only three unresolved squares is often forced, especially once the no-touching rule removes one of them.
One three-cell ship, two of two cells, and two single cells — nine ship cells in all.
No, not even diagonally. Every ship is completely surrounded by water.
How many ship cells that row or column contains.
Yes, a real fleet is placed first and the counts are read off it.
No. Battleship Solitaire runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
