About this game

Aces Up deals four cards at a time into four columns. Whenever two cards of the same suit are showing, the lower one is discarded. Aces rank highest, so they can never be beaten, and the game is won by clearing everything except the four of them.

It is one of the shortest solitaires there is and one of the least forgiving. Only around one deal in ten can be won, and most of the losses come from a single careless decision about which card to move into an empty column.

Tips & strategy

Think hard before filling an empty column. A space is the only way to reach a buried card, and using it on the wrong one wastes the single most valuable resource in the game.

Move aces into spaces when you can. An ace at the top of a column blocks everything beneath it forever, so relocating one into an empty column unblocks the pile behind it.

Discard everything possible before dealing. New cards can bury a discard you could have made, and once buried it may never come back.

Expect to lose most deals. The win rate is around one in ten, so a long run of failures says nothing about your play.

Questions

How do I discard a card?

When two cards of the same suit are showing, the lower one can go. Aces are highest and never go.

What are empty columns for?

You can move any top card into a space, which is the only way to free a card trapped beneath another.

How often is it winnable?

Roughly one deal in ten, so it is a genuinely difficult solitaire.

How do I win?

By clearing every card except the four aces.

Do I have to sign up to play?

No. Aces Up runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
