Three ball pool has no pockets to aim at. Instead you score by striking both object balls with your cue ball in a single shot, which is called a carom. It sounds easier than potting until you try it, because the second contact has to happen and you have no target to guide you.
Carom billiards is the older tradition, and it teaches cue control better than any pocket game. Without pockets, every shot is about angles and the path the cue ball takes after contact. Players who come from pool find it humbling, and then find their potting improves once they go back.
Plan the cue ball's whole journey, not just the first contact. A carom needs two touches, so you are aiming at where the cue ball goes after it hits the first ball, which is a completely different skill from potting.
Use the cushions deliberately. Many caroms are impossible on a direct line but straightforward off one or two rails, and once you start seeing the table in terms of rebound angles the scoring rate climbs sharply.
Play with less power than feels natural. The cue ball needs to still be travelling usefully after the first contact, and a hard shot scatters everything unpredictably before the second ball is reached.
Leave yourself a shot for next turn. Because your turn continues while you keep scoring, finishing each carom with the balls in a workable position is how long runs are built.
A shot where your cue ball touches both object balls. That is how points are scored, since there are no pockets.
No. Three ball is a carom game, so potting is irrelevant and only contacts matter.
Yes, so a good position can be turned into a long run of points.
Different rather than harder, but it demands much better cue-ball control.
