About this game

Word Wheel gives you nine letters arranged in a ring with one in the centre. Build words of four letters or more, and every single one must use the centre letter. It is the puzzle that has filled newspaper corners for decades, and it works because the answers are already in your vocabulary waiting to be retrieved.

The centre letter constraint is what makes it a puzzle rather than a list. Without it you would simply reel off short words; with it, you have to search for combinations built around one fixed point, which is a genuinely different mental task.

Tips & strategy

Start with the centre letter and build outward. Fixing it in the middle or at the end of a word and then trying letters around it is far more productive than scanning the ring at random.

Look for common endings. If the ring holds an E and an R, try ER endings; if it holds an S, plurals double your count quickly.

Work through the vowels one at a time. Every word needs one, so pairing the centre letter with each available vowel in turn covers the ground systematically.

Come back to it. Word retrieval improves after a short break, and words that would not come at all often arrive immediately on a second look.

Questions

What is the minimum word length?

Four letters. Anything shorter is not accepted.

Must every word use the centre letter?

Yes, that is the defining rule of the puzzle.

Can I use a letter twice?

Only if it appears twice in the wheel.

How many words are there?

Each wheel has a set list, and the counter shows how many you have found of the total.

Do I have to sign up to play?

No. Word Wheel runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
