Word Box gives you six letters and asks how many words you can build from them. Three letters minimum, and the full six-letter word is in there somewhere too. It is the puzzle at the heart of every letters round on television.
What makes it absorbing is that the answers are already inside you. You are not learning vocabulary, you are retrieving it, and the frustration of knowing there is another word in the letters is exactly what keeps people staring at the same six tiles.
Find the short words first. Three and four letter words are quick points and they warm up your pattern recognition for the longer ones, which rarely arrive when you go hunting for them directly.
Work through the vowels systematically. Take each vowel in turn and try building around it, since every word needs at least one and this stops you circling the same combinations.
Look for common endings. If you have an E, try adding it to the end of three-letter combinations. ER, ED and LE endings unlock a surprising number of words.
Come back to the six-letter word last. It is usually the hardest to spot, and by then you will have handled most of the letters in shorter combinations, which often reveals it.
