Five Letter Guess hides a five-letter word and gives you six attempts. After each guess the letters are coloured: one shade means right letter in the right place, another means the letter is in the word but positioned elsewhere. From those clues you narrow it down.
The format exploded in popularity for a good reason. Six guesses is exactly enough to be solvable by reasoning and tight enough that careless guesses cost you, so every attempt has to earn its place rather than simply being a word you thought of.
Open with a word full of common letters. Something containing several of E, A, R, S, T and O tests a large part of the alphabet at once, which is why words like SLATE and CRANE are such popular openers.
Do not waste guess two confirming guess one. If your opening revealed three letters, use the second guess on five entirely new letters rather than rearranging what you already know. Information first, solving second.
Pay attention to the letters ruled out, not just the ones found. Knowing that five letters are definitely absent narrows the possibilities enormously, and it is the half of the feedback most people underuse.
Watch for repeated letters. Words with a doubled letter catch people out, because a letter marked present might appear twice, and assuming otherwise wastes guesses.
