About this game

Word Complete blanks out letters in a word and gives you a clue. Work out what the word must be, then pick the missing letters from the alphabet. It is spelling practice that feels like a puzzle rather than a test.

What makes it effective is that the clue and the letter pattern constrain each other. Knowing the word describes a fruit narrows the field, and seeing which letters are already visible narrows it further, so the answer usually arrives from combining the two rather than from either alone.

Tips & strategy

Use the word length before anything else. A six-letter word for a citrus fruit is a much smaller set than the clue alone suggests, and counting the spaces is the fastest way in.

Look at the letters already showing. The visible letters often reveal a familiar pattern or ending, and recognising that usually gives you the whole word at once.

Say the word aloud once you think you have it. Hearing it confirms the spelling in a way that reading silently does not, which is exactly the skill this practises.

Do not guess letters at random. A wrong guess costs a life, and thinking about what the word could be first is both faster and better practice.

Questions

What age is this for?

From about six, alongside early spelling work.

How many words are there in a round?

Fifteen, with lives lost for wrong letters.

Do I get a clue?

Yes, every word comes with a short description to work from.

Is it good spelling practice?

Yes. Reconstructing a word from partial letters is exactly what strong spellers do automatically.

Do I have to sign up to play?

No. Word Complete runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
