Tower Defense gives you a winding path, a castle at the end of it, and waves of attackers walking steadily toward you. Spend your gold on towers placed alongside the route, and they will fire automatically at anything in range. Clear a wave, earn more gold, and brace for a bigger one.
The genre rewards planning over reflexes. You cannot control the towers once they are placed, so every decision happens before the wave arrives: which towers, positioned where, covering which stretch of path. A layout that looks strong against wave three can collapse entirely against wave eight.
Build at the corners. A tower placed on the inside of a bend covers two stretches of path at once, so attackers spend far longer inside its range than they would passing a tower on a straight. Corners are worth several straight-line towers.
Concentrate your firepower rather than spreading it. A cluster of towers covering the same stretch kills things quickly, while a thin line of single towers all along the route lets tough attackers walk through taking minor damage from each.
Save gold early rather than spending everything immediately. The opening waves are weak enough that a couple of towers hold them, and banking the difference lets you afford something substantial before the difficulty climbs.
Cover the start of the path, not the end. Anything you kill early never threatens your castle, and towers near the entrance get first contact with every single wave.
By clearing waves and defeating attackers. Gold is what limits how many towers you can build.
