About this game

Quoridor is a race with an unusual weapon. Each turn you either move your pawn one square toward the opposite side of the board, or you place a wall to make your opponent's journey longer. First pawn to reach the far edge wins, and your walls are the only way to slow the other player down.

The rule that makes it elegant is that you can never wall someone in completely. There must always be some route to their goal, however long. So walls do not trap, they only detour, and the whole game becomes a calculation about whether spending a turn on a wall costs your opponent more than the move you gave up.

Tips & strategy

Count the moves, not the walls. Before placing a wall, work out how many extra steps it actually costs your opponent. A wall that adds two steps has gained you one net move, because you spent a turn placing it. A wall that adds nothing is a wasted turn.

Save walls for the second half. Early walls are easy to walk around because the board is open, whereas the same wall placed later, when your opponent has committed to a route, can cost them a great deal. Walls are a finite resource, so spend them when they bite hardest.

Watch your own escape routes. Every wall you place shapes the board for both players, and it is entirely possible to build a corridor that ends up lengthening your own path more than your opponent's.

Sometimes just run. If you are ahead in the race and your opponent is out of walls, stop placing your own and simply move every turn. Nothing they can do will catch you, and each wall you place is a step you did not take.

Questions

Can I block my opponent completely?

No. The rules require that a path to their goal always exists, so walls lengthen the route rather than sealing it.

What can I do on my turn?

Either move your pawn one square or place a wall. Never both.

How many walls do I get?

A fixed supply, so each one is a real decision rather than something to spend freely.

How do I win?

By being the first to reach the row on the opposite side of the board.
