About this game

The Pocket Cube is the two by two version of the Rubik's Cube, shown here flattened so you can see all six faces at once. Turn a face and the stickers around it shift. Get every side to a single colour and it is solved.

The small cube has about 3.7 million positions, which sounds enormous and is trivial next to the full cube's 43 quintillion. Every scramble can be solved in eleven turns or fewer, so unlike the big cube it is genuinely within reach of working it out yourself.

Tips & strategy

Solve one face first, then fix the rest. Getting a single side to one colour is achievable by trial and error, and it gives you something concrete to build from.

Turn the same face four times to undo it. If a move makes things worse, three more turns of the same face puts everything back exactly as it was.

Watch a corner, not a sticker. On a two by two cube every piece is a corner with three colours, and following one piece through a few turns teaches you what each move actually does.

Expect to make it worse before better. Every twisty puzzle requires temporarily disturbing a solved section, and refusing to do that is what leaves people stuck at one face.

Questions

How many positions are there?

About 3.7 million, which is small enough that every one can be solved in eleven turns or fewer.

Why is it shown flat?

So all six faces are visible at once. A rotating three-dimensional cube looks better but hides half the puzzle.

Is every scramble solvable?

Yes, scrambles are made by turning a solved cube, so reversing those turns always works.

Is it easier than the 3x3?

Considerably. It has no centre or edge pieces, only corners, which removes most of the complexity.

Do I have to sign up to play?

No. Pocket Cube runs entirely inside this page, so it starts the moment the page opens. There is nothing to download, no plugin, and no account to create.
