About this game

Number Chain scatters numbers across the screen and asks you to tap them in order, starting at one. It sounds trivial and turns into a genuine test of how quickly your eyes can find a specific target among clutter.

This is a version of the trail making test used in neuropsychology for decades. What it measures is visual scanning speed and attention, and the reason it works is that there is no strategy to hide behind: either you spot the next number quickly or you do not.

Tips & strategy

Scan systematically rather than randomly. Sweeping the screen in a consistent pattern finds targets faster than letting your eyes jump about, because random searching revisits the same areas repeatedly.

Look for the next number while tapping the current one. Your finger and your eyes can work independently, and the players with the best times are already looking ahead as they tap.

Remember where you saw high numbers. If you notice 23 while hunting for 12, keeping that location in mind saves you a full search later.

Start with the smaller grid. Building the scanning habit on fifteen numbers transfers directly to forty, whereas starting on the largest board mostly teaches frustration.

Questions

How is my score measured?

By the time taken to tap every number in order. Your best is saved in your browser.

Can I choose the difficulty?

Yes, by picking how many numbers appear on the board.

Is this a real test?

It is closely related to the trail making test, a long-established measure of visual attention and processing speed.

Any technique that helps?

Scanning in a systematic pattern and looking ahead for the next number while tapping the current one.

Is there anything to install?

Completely free, with no trial and no unlock. Number Chain loads with the page and plays immediately, without an install step or a video ad first.
