About this game

Maze Muncher is a love letter to the most famous maze game ever made. You steer through a maze eating every dot while four ghosts hunt you down. Grab a power pill and the tables turn briefly, letting you chase the ghosts instead. Clear all the dots and the maze refills, a little faster and a little meaner.

The genius of the format, then and now, is that the maze has no dead luck. The ghosts follow patterns, the corners are the same every time, and everything that happens is something you could have anticipated. Losing always has a reason, which is exactly why one more go is so hard to resist.

Tips & strategy

Keep moving and never stop in the open. A stationary muncher is a cornered one, because the ghosts close distance while you decide. Even when you are unsure where to go, keep drifting toward unexplored dots so you always have an escape route open.

Save the power pills for when the ghosts are actually close. Eating one while the ghosts are far away wastes most of the scared timer. The big points, and the breathing room, come from luring two or three ghosts near a pill and then grabbing it.

Use the corners to shake pursuers. You turn corners instantly, while a chasing ghost has to travel the full path, so a tight sequence of turns opens distance. The tunnels that wrap from one side to the other are the best escape of all when a ghost is right behind you.

Clear one region at a time rather than wandering. Leaving scattered single dots all over the maze means dangerous return trips later, when the level speeds up. Eat methodically so your last few dots are somewhere safe, not deep in ghost territory.

Questions

What do the power pills do?

They briefly turn the ghosts vulnerable so you can eat them for bonus points. The effect wears off, so use it while ghosts are near.

Do the ghosts move randomly?

No. They follow patterns, which is what makes the game learnable rather than luck-based.

What happens when I clear the maze?

It refills with dots and the pace increases, so each level is a little harder than the last.

Are there tunnels?

Yes, the side tunnels wrap you from one edge of the maze to the other, which is invaluable for escaping a chasing ghost.
