About this game

Dice Race is a simplified member of the backgammon family. Each roll clears checkers from the matching point, and the first player to empty their side takes the set. Matches run over several sets, so a bad run of dice can still be recovered.

Because there is no movement around a board and no hitting, this is the purest form of a race game: the dice decide, and the interest comes entirely from the swing of the sets. It is the version most often played casually, and it takes about a minute to learn.

Tips & strategy

There is very little you can influence, and that is the appeal. This is a race decided by dice, which makes it genuinely fair between players of any age or experience.

Watch the doubles. Rolling a pair clears far more than an ordinary roll, so a single lucky double can turn a set around completely.

Play a full match rather than a single set. One set is almost pure chance, but across several the swings even out and the result feels more satisfying.

Use it as a first dice game for a young child. Matching a rolled number to a point on the board is exactly the sort of number recognition that early counting practice is built on.

Questions

How do I clear a point?

By rolling its number. The matching checkers are removed.

What do doubles do?

They clear considerably more than a normal roll, which is what creates the big swings.

Is there any strategy?

Very little. It is a race decided by the dice, which is what makes it fair for all ages.

How long is a match?

Several sets, so a match takes a few minutes.

Is there anything to install?

Completely free, with no trial and no unlock. Dice Race loads with the page and plays immediately, without an install step or a video ad first.
