Hold to rise (uses fuel), release to glide

Balloon Race sends you drifting across the sky with a limited supply of fuel. Hold to rise, release to glide gently down, and try to travel as far as possible before you run out or hit something. One control, one resource, and a distance counter climbing steadily.
The fuel is what turns this from a simple flyer into a small planning game. Rising costs you something, so the skill is in climbing only as much as you need and letting the glide do the rest. Children work out that hoarding fuel beats burning it quickly, which is a nice lesson smuggled inside a balloon.
Glide as much as you can. Descending costs nothing while rising burns fuel, so the furthest journeys come from long shallow glides with short corrections, not from staying high the whole way.
Climb early rather than late. Height is stored energy: gaining it while you have fuel gives you a long glide afterwards, whereas trying to climb once the tank is low leaves you nothing to spend.
Watch what is ahead, not your balloon. Obstacles need to be cleared before you reach them, and by the time one is close you have already needed to start rising.
Small taps rather than long holds. Short bursts keep you level with far less fuel than a continuous climb, and staying level is usually all you need.
Rising uses fuel; gliding down is free. Managing that trade-off is the whole game.
By gliding as much as possible and only climbing when you need to clear something.
No, you are travelling for distance until you crash or run out of fuel.
