Mancala is one of the oldest known family of games, played across Africa and Asia for centuries with nothing more than a board of pits and a handful of seeds. You scoop up the seeds from one of your pits and drop them one by one into the pits that follow, going around the board. The aim is to gather the most seeds in your own store.
For such simple actions the game is startlingly deep. Every move is fully determined once you pick a pit, so there is no luck at all, which makes Mancala a pure calculation game like chess. Strong play is about seeing several sows ahead and setting up the extra turns and captures that let you pull far ahead.
Landing your last seed in your own store earns an extra turn, and chaining these is the single most powerful thing in the game. Before any other plan, check whether a move gives you a free turn, and look for sequences where several extra turns come one after another.
Set up captures. In the Kalah rules used here, if your last seed lands in an empty pit on your own side, you capture it and the seeds in the pit directly opposite. Aiming a sow to end in your own empty pit, opposite a full enemy one, can swing a large pile of seeds at once.
Watch what your move hands over. Because sowing crosses into your opponent's pits, a careless move can load their side with seeds or set up their capture. Sometimes the right play is the one that starves their store rather than the one that fills yours fastest.
Late in the game, think about emptying your side deliberately. When one player's pits are all empty, the other collects every remaining seed on their own side. If you are ahead, clearing your side to end the game can lock in the win.
