About this game

Line Draw is a territory game played on a grid of dots. Each turn you draw one line, and whenever your line closes off an area, that region becomes yours. Whoever holds the most territory when there are no lines left to draw takes the game.

The strategy revolves around a tension that appears in a lot of paper-and-pencil games: the line that completes your own region is also the line that opens the door for your opponent's. Knowing when to close an area and when to leave it hanging is the whole contest.

Tips & strategy

Do not draw the line that leaves a region one move from completion. Handing your opponent a free claim is the most common mistake, exactly as in Dots and Boxes. Count the open sides of every nearby region before you commit.

Play in the areas that are already crowded. Regions with most of their boundary drawn are where the decisive moves happen, while an untouched corner of the board is safe to leave for later.

Think about who runs out of safe moves first. Late in the game every remaining line gives something away, so the player forced to move first in a tight position loses ground. Steering toward that situation is real strategy.

Take a small loss to avoid a big one. Sometimes conceding one small region is the correct move if the alternative opens up a much larger area for your opponent on the following turn.
