About this game

Geography Quiz asks two kinds of question: name the capital city of a country, and name the continent it sits on. Both are the sort of fact that feels like it should be easy and turns out to have gaps in it for almost everyone.

Capital cities are a particularly good test because the obvious answer is often wrong. The largest city in a country is frequently not its capital, and Brazil, Australia, Canada and Turkey all catch people out for exactly that reason. Getting those wrong once is usually enough to remember them for good.

Tips & strategy

Watch out for countries whose biggest city is not the capital. Brazil, Australia, Canada, Turkey, Switzerland and the United States all have capitals that are not their largest city, and that pattern catches out more people than any other.

Learn continents by region rather than one country at a time. Grouping countries into neighbours makes them far easier to recall than memorising them individually, and it gives you a way to reason toward an answer you have not learned.

Use elimination on the multiple choice. Even when you do not know the answer, you can often rule out two options confidently, which turns a wild guess into a coin flip.

Pay attention to the ones you get wrong. A fact you missed and then saw the answer to sticks far better than one you got right by luck, so the mistakes are where the learning actually happens.

Questions

What sort of questions are asked?

Two kinds: the capital city of a country, and which continent a country is in.

Why do I keep getting capitals wrong?

Usually because the largest city is not the capital. Brazil, Australia and Canada are classic examples.

How many lives do I get?

A limited number, so wrong answers eventually end the round.

Is it good for learning?

Yes. Quick repeated quizzing is one of the most effective ways to commit facts like these to memory.

Do I need to download anything?

Nothing at all. The whole of Geography Quiz is built into the page itself, which is why there is no loading bar and no waiting before you can play.
