2048 is a sliding puzzle built on a single rule: when two tiles carrying the same number collide, they merge into one tile carrying double. Start from a board of twos and fours, keep merging, and the target tile is 2048. What makes it stick is that every move affects all four rows at once, so there is no such thing as a local decision.
The game is not really about arithmetic. It is about board management. A new tile appears after each move, and the board only holds sixteen. Lose control of the layout and you will find yourself with sixteen unmatched tiles and no legal move, which is the only way the game ends.
Pick one corner and never let your largest tile leave it. Most strong players anchor bottom-left, then only ever press left, down, and occasionally up. The moment your biggest tile wanders into the middle of the board, it starts blocking merges from every direction at once.
Keep the row holding your big tile sorted in descending order, so the largest sits in the corner and the values step down along the row. A sorted row merges into itself like a zipper. An unsorted one strands a large tile between two small ones that will not combine for a long time.
Avoid the up key when you are anchored at the bottom. Every press of the direction opposite your anchor risks lifting the big tile out of its corner, and a new tile can spawn underneath it. Play as though that key barely exists and only reach for it when you genuinely have no alternative.
When the board fills up, resist the urge to make the merge that scores most. Make the merge that opens the most space instead. Reaching 2048 is a long game, and the player who survives to move three hundred beats the player who scored fast and suffocated at move ninety.
You can keep playing. The 2048 tile is the named target, but nothing stops you merging onward to 4096 and beyond if the board stays healthy.
